April, 2009

Message from Dr. Clark:

The focus of our April, 2009 newsletter is What’s the Big Deal About Protein Supplements?  You are often bombarded with the “miracle” supplements that will make all of your weight loss worries go away and finally be the answer for quick success.  You hear it so often, that your skepticism may be on the rise or you may have a cupboard full of the “next best thing” that wasn’t the answer after all (or both).  However, there is no doubt that supplements can aid in faster weight loss...if they are the right type of protein supplement.   Why?  There are three main reasons:

1.     They simplify your diet – Supplements take the guesswork out of “what am I going to eat?”  You develop a regimen that is easy to track based upon your recommended caloric and macronutrient needs.  It is simple and if you utilize the right protein supplements, very filling, nutritious and tasty.

2.     They are satisfying – Many protein supplements (especially those that are not entirely whey protein) are very satisfying and filling.  Those particularly with casein protein are digested slower and more likely to keep you satiated for a longer period of time.

3.     They are easy to track – As you know, we are proponents of journaling your food intake, particularly during any weight loss phase and “getting back on track” phases.  If you utilize protein supplements, you often ingest the same ones and you can easily document their nutritional content or save it in your profile for online free programs like www.fitday.com

At CMH, we taste test every item that we sell and utilize more than one vendor so we can be sure to purchase the best of the best for our patients.  I also monitor the nutritional content and how they are manufactured so that we can offer the highest quality products.

All of the health professionals at CMH have our favorite product(s) that we use personally and recommend to patients.  I start my day with at least 30 grams of protein and like to mix up the flavors (i.e. mint chocolate pudding shake mix along with vanilla pudding shake mix).  I prefer a liquid format so I can drink it in the car on the way to the hospital.  My favorite bar is the Cinnamon Crunch and I particularly like the oatmeal selections on the weekends for breakfast.  My wife starts her day with chocolate Weight & Inches and our children love the Mint Hot Chocolate, Fudge Graham Bars and the Caramel Nut Bars (great for lunch boxes).  In addition to the quality of the product, they are cost effective as a meal replacement and of the highest quality available.

Claire, Penny and Sybille Share Their Favorite Protein Supplement Product

Claire- Proti 15 Fruit Drink Mixes

CMH carries quite a few vitamin and food supplements, and believe it or not, each one is carefully selected for both quality and taste.  Choosing a favorite is very easy for me as I am a great believer in keeping your body well hydrated at all times.  The Proti 15 fruit drink mixes are a great way to get your required fluids in for the day by adding both flavor and 15 grams of protein.  We carry five different flavors:  Peach Mango (which happens to be our best seller), Lemon, Grapefruit, Cran-Berry Fusion and Wildberry Passion.  Water suppresses the appetite naturally, helps to metabolize stored fat, aids in the prevention of water retention, helps to keep skin flexible and muscles functioning correctly and helps the body get rid o waste and relieve constipation.  With our bodies being approximately 65% water, we really need to drink the eight glasses recommended daily.  With such wonderful fruit drink mix flavors, there is no excuse.  Drink up and enjoy!

Penny – Proti Max Anytime Drinks (Ready to Drink)

It can’t get any easier to get your protein in and quench your urge for something cold, sweet and satisfying.  No need to add water, find a glass or use a spoon, just shake open and drink.  It’s best, of course, when chilled.

The Proti Max Anytime come in three different delicious flavors that can satisfy a variety of urges that happen to pop up.  Hoe about the mocha flavor for a mid-morning pick me up, to replace that extra cup of coffee.  The chocolate flavor takes care of those individuals who may crave some chocolate or that milkshake in the mid-afternoon.  For those who need a little ice cream after dinner, you may want to replace it with the vanilla flavor to satisfy that desire.  They are also great for your pre or post workouts to help you replenish some of your fluids and get in that 15 grams of recommended protein within 30 minutes of your workout.

Bring them along when you are on the road.  Just pack them on ice in your cooler and you have a convenient, satisfying and healthy drink.  Each Proti Max Anytime drink provides you with 15 grams of protein and 100-110 calories with an effective carbohydrate count of up to 2.  Easy, delicious, satisfying and nutritionally balanced – you can’t beat them!

There is more…turn the page!

Sybille – Proti Bar

My favorite product from the Supplement Shack at CMH is the Proti Bar – specifically, the Caramel Delight flavor.  I’m sure you all have heard me mention these bars during class, but they really do taste like candy with their nougat-like center!  Each bar comes in at 150 calories with 15 grams of protein.  These convenient little bars are great for getting you through your afternoon hunger before dinner.  The caramel will curb your sweet ravings, while the protein will hold you over for a few hours.  Because they do have 16 grams of carbohydrate, I would not recommend having more than one per day.  These are also good to have mid-morning after a workout!
